Discussion paper and survey – the next Canada’s Energy Future report
The CER has an extensive history of producing long-term energy supply and demand outlooks, dating back to the first report in 1967, and more recently continuing as the CER’s Canada's Energy Future publication series. The latest in this series is Canada's Energy Future 2026, released in March 2026 . These outlooks explore how possible energy futures might unfold for Canadians over the long term. Our scenarios cover all energy commodities and all Canadian provinces and territories. We use economic and energy models to do this analysis.
Our outlooks are the product of scenarios based on a specific premise and set of assumptions. They are not predictions about the future, nor are they policy recommendations.
We engage with Canadians as we develop our outlooks through discussion papers, surveys, and targeted discussions. Feedback received through these processes provides valuable insights on what energy experts, governments, Indigenous Peoples, industry, civil society organizations, and interested citizens are looking for from the Energy Futures series.

The Canada Energy Regulator (CER) regulates energy infrastructure to support its safe and efficient operation and delivery of energy to Canada and the world. Safety, environmental protection and meaningful engagement with Indigenous Peoples, industry and other stakeholders are central to its work. Alongside its regulatory functions, the CER plays a vital role in providing timely and relevant energy information and analysis to support the energy conversation in Canada via our energy information core responsibility.
